New Zealand can look small on a map, but South Island roads are often slower than visitors expect. Mountain passes, single-lane bridges, scenic stops and changing weather can add significant time to a driving day.
For a seven-day trip, choose one region or a simple point-to-point route instead of trying to circle the entire island. Two to four hours of driving on most days leaves room for walks, viewpoints, meals and campsite check-in.
Build at least one lighter day into the itinerary. That buffer makes the trip more enjoyable and gives you flexibility if weather changes your plans.
