Driving a campervan in New Zealand rewards a slower pace. Roads outside the main centres can be narrow, winding and slower than the distance on a map suggests. Build extra time into every driving day and avoid planning long transfers immediately after an international flight.
Keep left, use designated slow-vehicle bays where available, and check official road-condition information before alpine or remote sections. Fuel, food and mobile coverage can also become less frequent away from larger towns.
