This 6-day loop out of Queenstown is the classic way to see Fiordland without turning it into one exhausting day trip. Rather than driving to Milford Sound and back in a single 10-hour slog, this route splits the journey across two nights in Te Anau, adds a half-day detour to the Routeburn Track lookout above Glenorchy, and finishes with a day of Queenstown adventure activities before you hand the van back. Expect narrow, winding roads through genuine mountain terrain — this isn’t a motorway cruise, so budget more time than the raw kilometres suggest.

Why this route works well by campervan

Milford Sound has almost no accommodation of its own, so nearly everyone doing this drive needs a base to return to — and Te Anau, 119 km short of the fiord, is that base. A campervan lets you do the Milford Road at your own pace: pulling over for Mirror Lakes, the Eglinton Valley, and the Chasm without being tied to a coach schedule, then retreating to a holiday park in Te Anau rather than pushing straight back to Queenstown after a full day of driving and a cruise. It also means you’re set up to catch the Te Anau glowworm caves in the evening, and to fit in the Glenorchy detour, both of which are easy to skip if you’re trying to do this as a single long day from Queenstown.

Before you go

  • Book the glowworm caves and Milford Sound cruise ahead of time, especially October–April — both regularly sell out in peak season.
  • Check Milford Road conditions before Day 4. The Homer Tunnel corridor can close for avalanche control, usually in the morning with reopening by late morning; check NZTA’s website the night before and build in a buffer.
  • Fuel up in Te Anau before heading to Milford Sound — there are no services on the Milford Road itself.
  • Sandflies are relentless at Milford Sound. Bring repellent; you’ll want it the moment you get out of the van.
  • Download offline maps for the Te Anau–Milford stretch — cell coverage disappears for most of the drive.
  • Book holiday parks in Te Anau and Queenstown early in peak season; Te Anau in particular has limited capacity for a town that every Milford-bound traveller passes through.
  • Keep a flexible buffer in your schedule for weather — Fiordland gets serious rainfall, and while that often makes the waterfalls more dramatic, it can also slow the drive.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Queenstown: pick up and settle in

Collect your campervan and spend the afternoon getting oriented in Queenstown rather than rushing straight onto the road. Stock up on groceries and any last supplies here — it's the biggest town on the route and worth using properly, since options get smaller from here south. Ride the Skyline Gondola up Bob's Peak for a lake and mountain overview of where you're headed, then settle in at a holiday park in or around town. Day 2: Glenorchy and the Routeburn Track lookout

Take the road along Lake Wakatipu to Glenorchy — a scenic, mostly flat 46 km drive with the Southern Alps ahead of you the whole way. From Glenorchy, drive to the Routeburn Track car park for a short walk to the lookout, or add the easy Lake Sylvan track if you want a longer stop. This is one of the most photographed stretches in the region and a good easy day before the longer drives ahead. Return to Queenstown for a second night. Day 3: Queenstown to Te Anau

Head south on SH6 along Lake Wakatipu, through the Devil's Staircase and the small settlements of Kingston, Garston, and Mossburn — worth a coffee stop or two. This leg takes around 2 hours without stops, but allow closer to 3 with photo breaks. Once settled in Te Anau, book onto an evening glowworm caves boat tour: it's the only way to see them and needs to be booked ahead, especially in peak season. Driving: ~170 km, ~2–2.5 hrs · Overnight: Te Anau

Day 4: Te Anau to Milford Sound and back

This is the big day. Fuel up in Te Anau — it's the last services before Milford Sound — then follow the Milford Road through the Eglinton Valley, stopping at Mirror Lakes and Knobs Flat, through the Homer Tunnel, and down to Milford Sound itself. Take a scenic cruise on the fiord (2–3 hours), which is the highlight most people build the whole route around. Drive back to Te Anau in the afternoon; the road is just as scenic in reverse, and you'll likely catch different stops than you did on the way in. If you'd rather not do the return drive the same day, Milford Sound Lodge is the one option for staying overnight at the fiord itself — book well ahead, as it's limited and popular. Day 5: Te Anau back to Queenstown

A more relaxed day. Retrace the route north to Queenstown, with time to stop anywhere you missed on Day 3, or to take a short walk on the Kepler Track from Te Anau before you leave. Arrive back in Queenstown with the afternoon and evening free to explore the town properly, restock, or just rest before your last full day. Driving: ~170 km, ~2–2.5 hrs · Overnight: Queenstown

Day 6: Queenstown adrenaline day and departure

Your last day is built around Queenstown's adventure activities rather than more driving: bungy jumping at the Kawarau Bridge, jet boating on the Shotover River, or the Skyline Luge are all popular half-day options and easy to combine. Use the rest of the day to clean and refuel the van ahead of drop-off, and check your rental company's return requirements before you go — fuel level and cleanliness are the two most common causes of extra charges at handover.
