Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Uluru sunset viewing

Collect your campervan in Alice Springs and settle in for the drive south along the Stuart and Lasseter Highways to the Uluru area. Set up camp, then head to a sunset viewing point in the late afternoon to watch the rock change colour as the sun goes down.

Day 2: Kata Tjuta walking trails

Rise early to beat the heat and drive the short distance to Kata Tjuta. Tackle the Valley of the Winds walk for sweeping views between the domes, or take the shorter Walpa Gorge walk if you prefer an easier morning.

Day 3: Kings Canyon rim walk

Pack up camp and drive north-west via the Luritja Road to Kings Canyon in Watarrka National Park. Weather permitting, tackle the Rim Walk for panoramic views over the canyon and the George Gill Range, or take the flatter Kings Creek walk along the canyon floor.

Day 4: West MacDonnell Ranges

Begin the drive back towards Alice Springs, turning off into the West MacDonnell Ranges. Stop at Ormiston Gorge and Ellery Creek Big Hole for a swim, and Serpentine Gorge for a short walk, camping overnight in the ranges.

Day 5: On the road

Continue east through the ranges, stopping at Standley Chasm and Simpsons Gap before rolling into Alice Springs by evening. Restock groceries and fuel ready for a couple of days exploring the town and its surrounds.

Day 6: Alice Springs town highlights

Spend the day exploring Alice Springs itself: the Alice Springs Desert Park, the Royal Flying Doctor Service base, the Telegraph Station and the view from Anzac Hill. It's a good chance to do laundry, top up water and gas, and rest up before heading further afield.

Day 7: Rainbow Valley day trip

Take a day trip south of Alice Springs to Rainbow Valley, known for its striking red and white banded sandstone cliffs that are especially photogenic at sunrise and sunset. High-clearance vehicles are recommended for the access track, so check conditions before setting out.

Day 8: Palm Valley and Finke Gorge National Park

Drive south-west to Finke Gorge National Park to explore Palm Valley, home to the rare Red Cabbage Palm found nowhere else in the world. The access road is rough and best suited to 4WD campervans, so check conditions before setting out.

Day 9: Free day in Alice Springs

Use this flexible buffer day to revisit any highlights the weather affected earlier in the trip, browse the Todd Mall markets if they're running, or simply relax around Alice Springs before the last leg of the trip.

Day 10: Depart Alice Springs

Give the campervan a final clean and check for personal belongings before returning it in Alice Springs. Allow time in the morning for a pre-return inspection, then head on to your onward flight or travels.
