South Island family road trip overview

This eight-day campervan loop starts and finishes in Christchurch, linking the turquoise lakes of the Mackenzie Country with Queenstown, Wānaka, glacier country, the West Coast and Arthur’s Pass. The route covers approximately 1,220 km. Allow extra time beyond the estimated driving hours for food stops, viewpoints, roadworks and the slower pace of a campervan.

The journey is designed for families who want a mix of easy outdoor experiences and manageable travel days. Longer transfers are balanced with two-night-style pacing around Queenstown and short, flexible activities such as lakeside walks, playground stops and scenic lookouts.

Route and driving conditions

The loop follows sealed state highways, but several sections are winding, exposed or alpine. State Highway 8 crosses high-country passes; the Crown Range route between Queenstown and Wānaka is steep and can be affected by snow or ice; State Highway 6 through Haast Pass is remote; and Arthur’s Pass can experience rapidly changing weather. Drivers who prefer an easier Queenstown–Wānaka road can use State Highway 6 via Cromwell instead of the Crown Range.

Fuel and grocery options become limited between Wānaka and Franz Josef, so top up before crossing Haast Pass. Mobile coverage is patchy on the West Coast and through the alpine passes. Campervan planning

Use designated holiday parks, Department of Conservation campsites or other legal camping areas. Freedom-camping rules vary by district and may require a certified self-contained vehicle. Reserve popular sites early from December to February and during school holidays.

Keep food secured against kea in alpine areas, never feed wildlife and take all rubbish with you. Weather can close roads or tracks at short notice, so treat the schedule as a framework and keep a buffer in the final day before a flight or fixed booking.

Best time to travel

November to April generally offers longer daylight and milder conditions, although rain is possible year-round on the West Coast. Winter travel can be beautiful but requires more flexibility, shorter daylight planning and preparation for snow, ice and chain requirements on alpine roads.
