Freedom Camping in New Zealand: What Campervan Travellers Should Know

Freedom camping can be a memorable part of a New Zealand road trip, but it does not mean you can park overnight anywhere. Local rules differ between councils and some areas restrict freedom camping to certified self-contained vehicles or designated sites.

Before each overnight stop, check the current council rules and on-site signage. Use public dump stations correctly, take rubbish with you and avoid setting up outdoor furniture where camping is not permitted.

A good itinerary mixes freedom-camping options with holiday parks or campgrounds, especially when you need showers, laundry, charging or a reliable place to stay during poor weather.
